Yeah, so this is pretty much my life. Being told that I was not intelligent because I have learning disabilities. Not being able to process new information quickly, because of my sensory integration disorder doesn’t make me less intelligent, it just means I experience the world differently.
Recently, I found out the results of an old IQ test from when I was little, and while it was cool that my IQ is above average, it made me start thinking about the IQ thing in general. There is more than one “intelligence”. There is more than one way to be “intelligent” The IQ test, while it has been adapted to more ground, is still the measure of how quickly someone can process and integrate new information. So, anyone with any sort of sensory issue, or depression, or learning disability, or emotional trauma, or just anyone with a different-than-normal cognition process is automatically cut out.
I can literally understand anything, if you give me enough time. I have a high emotional competency. But these things are not taken into account when measuring intelligence. Longer story shorter, people can’t just be shoved into a one-size-fits-all definition of intelligence and cognition. People are different and they experience the world differently.
